“I don’t know how to meditate. I can’t quiet my mind.” Do you find yourself saying this? Are you discouraged to the point of giving up on meditation? You are certainly not alone. Many people want to experience the many benefits and gifts of meditation, but struggle with transcending the mind and creating a meditation practice that works for them. I’ll let you in on some secrets I’ve uncovered over the years that can help you achieve a meditative state to transform your concentration, clarity, and consciousness.
Secret 1 – Meditation is Not Something to Do. It’s a Way to Be.
We often forget we are human beings and not human doings. Meditation is the same way. This simple shift in relating to meditation as a state of being versus an activity to do takes the pressure off of doing it right or wrong or not knowing how to do it at all. If meditation were substituted with “bliss,” we wouldn’t say, “do bliss.” Rather, we’d say, “be blissful.” There are many ways to be blissful and the path to bliss can be different for each person. It’s the same with meditation – there is no one way or right way… it’s just your way of being in a meditative state.
The entire idea of doing something the wrong way, right way, or best way is a function of the egoic, conditioned self. We’re barraged with quick fix solutions all day long. These all play to the ego – the part of each of us that will forever be in need of repair or improvement. The ego is never satisfied. So we must decouple from the ego to be meditative.
When are you in the “zen zone” – that space when you feel like you’re alive and fully present in the moment? The zen zone are the times when your mind, body, and spirit are all aligned and working together to manifest your best self. Are you in this zone when playing a sport or exercising? Gardening? Playing a musical instrument? Dancing? Breathing intentionally? Writing? You can be DOING something that results in a heightened state of BEING. This state is magically meditative.
Secret 2 – Meditation is Not About Little You. It’s About a Bigger You.
Consider for a moment that you are not your brain, you are a fractal of universal consciousness that is localizing itself in a human body in this space and time. Sounds mysterious and complex, right? It’s really a quite simple concept and may transform your perspective and experience of meditation.
Meditation is the invitation to reconnect with this Divine universal consciousness, the non-local mind. Think of the non-local mind as the singular consciousness from which we derive. We are not separate from it, we are it. By stepping out of the local mind – the egoic conditioned self, the brain – you become aware of awareness itself and the illusion of separation dissolves. You are once again connected to the big you – the universe.
Meditation is not about you controlling your brain and your thoughts. Meditation is about decoupling from the thoughts because the big you is not the thoughts. Upon reconnecting with the non-local mind, you experience bliss and love, for it is unattached to the human, local experience. Who you really are is not this body, this brain or mind. You are the Universe.
Secret 3 – You Are Out of Your Mind. Literally.
The incessant chatter of the mind is a phenomenon we’re all subject to. Attempts to quiet the mind are futile. It’s like telling a 3 year old to stop bantering. The voice in your head will always want to narrate everything and provide you with your own personal soundtrack for life. Don’t attempt to quiet the mind, just don’t engage it. It will begin to fade away into the background like the hum of the refrigerator.
Did you know that 95% of your thoughts are recycled every day? That’s a lot of clutter, keeping you from being your big, powerful self. This means of all the thoughts you have in a day, only 5% are something new and original. This is why distinguishing the chatter is vital to transcending the chatter. Until you recognize the real you is observer of the local mind, not the mind itself, you remain subject to its musings.
So, who are you? The real You is out of your mind. You are the universe, the non-local mind, the Divine consciousness.
